Position Summary: Responsible for the daily feeding, cleaning and maintenance of the island birds and exhibits as part of the Island Entertainment experience. They will work in collaboration with the Entertainment staff and Photo team to allow guests photo opportunities and handling of the birds while delivering an excellent guest island experience by performing the following essential duties and responsibilities on the island. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: In accordance with Royal Caribbean International’s philosophy of the Royal Way , each employee conducts oneself in a professional and courteous manner at all times. This consists of physical and verbal interactions with guests or fellow island/shipboard employees and/or in the presence of guest contact and crew areas. Maintains continual interaction with the guests during potential bird handling encounters or photo opportunities. Responsible for feeding the birds and cleaning their designated cages/ aviaries Maintains proper handling and safety of the birds while interacting with guests and while moving birds from one location to another. Be able to train other personnel on proper handling procedures as needed to assist with guest and bird interactions and photo opportunities. Communicate, stimulate and interact with birds. Performs regular inventory of all necessary bird equipment and supplies including bird feed. Determines if equipment requires replacement or repair. Coordinates with Island Activities Manager when requisitioning replacement supplies and feed. Responsible for handling all equipment safely with care and for site preparedness before guests arrive. Participates in embarkation and debarkation of the island by greeting or de-greeting, disseminating information and directing or escorting guests. Attends meetings, training activities, courses and all other work-related activities as required on the island. Performs related duties as required. Island/ Shipboard employees will be required to perform any other job-related duties assigned by their supervisor or management. Qualifications: 1-3 years experience handling birds. Customer service experience in a hotel, recreation, leisure, tourist/ vacation industry is preferred. Experience with exotic avian care and maintenance in a professional setting preferred. Ability to assist in restraining birds for medical evaluation and grooming required. Should have passion and enjoy working with animals. Ability to communicate tactfully with guests, department heads and island employees to resolve problems and negotiate resolutions. Working knowledge of computers, internet access, and the ability to navigate within a variety of software basic packages preferred Completion of high school or basic education equivalency required. Language Requirements: Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially with guests. Ability to read and write English in order to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors and co-workers. Physical Demands: All island employees must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills. Full use/range of motion of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency. Must be able to stand in the sun and endure external elements during work assignment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Work Environment: Outdoors may be required to walk in extreme humid and hot conditions.
