Position Summary: This position is responsible for supervising the work of the Plumbers/Carpenters/Upholsterers on the Island. He or she will report to the Assistant Site Engineer, under Site Engineer Management and Department. The Facilities Maintenance Lead is further responsible for the maintenance and repair related to the Plumbers, Carpenters and Upholsterers, and related equipment within the Island, plus helping during ship calling with pier operation either requested by the Assistant Site Engineer. The incumbent must demonstrate an exceptionally positive attitude and the willingness to fully participate in a dynamic team environment. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Royal Caribbean International expects each Island Management team member to relentlessly exemplify the principles of the Anchored in Excellence Credo to all team members. In addition, all duties and responsibilities are to be performed in accordance with Royal Caribbean International’s The Royal Way, SQM standards, USPH guidelines, environmental, and safety policies. Daily work leader/supervisor for the Plumber/Carpenter/Upholster. Assign and supervise the requests for general facilities repair work and carpentry, plumbing and upholster works. Ensure that crew is using the proper safety and protection equipment in daily operations and those critical working areas are sealed off from passengers and other crew. Carry out most steel-work, including stainless steel. Responsible for the maintenance and repair of all piping related to the Island operations, such as fresh water, black water, gray water, pulper, drains etc. Control and assign plumbing and repair work (installations, structural repairs, and inspections) to self and staff in accordance with the following areas of responsibility: Laundry equipment (non-electrical) Technical and plumbing equipment in galleys, bars and pantries. Welding, including TIG and MIG. Lathe machine. Most steel-work, including stainless steel. General Plumbing and Piping Determine the proper storage and control of spare parts and tools within the group. Assign staff regularly to the cleaning and maintenance of the workshop and lockers. Assist the Assistant Site Engineer with budget proposals. Take responsibility for appropriate on-the-job training of the Plumber, Carpenter and Upholsterers as necessary. May be required to perform and/or assign additional routines and work descriptions as listed in the Planned Maintenance System. Know, follow and enforce SQM policies. Attend mandatory crew meeting Maintain and encourage the “Anchored in Excellence” credo at all times. Perform related duties as assigned by the Assistant Site Engineer. Qualifications: 5-10 years prior combined experience as a Ship Mechanic, Repairman and/or Machinist, including supervision of same. Cruise industry experience preferred. Must possess the equivalent of a Mechanic/Repairman Certificate of competency or its equivalent in a combination of training and experience Must be able to operate a lathe machine, Milling Machine and common stationary Shop Machinery. Must be able to weld gas and electric, including TIG and MIG. Possess the necessary skill to weld Cast Iron, Aluminum and Stainless Steel. Must be able to understand and perform repair and installation of plumbing, carpentry and upholstery systems. Must be able to read and understand Technical Drawings. Other Skills: Computer Skills - Working knowledge of personal computers within a Windows environment with e-mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, and AMOS preferred as well as related printers and equipment. Active Listening – listening to what other people are saying and asking appropriate questions for clarification. Language Requirements: Ability to speak clearly, distinctly and cordially with guests and employees. Ability to speak and read English fluently, analyzes and interpret procedure manuals and memos, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to prepare basic reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of employees and guests. Ability to speak additional language(s) is desirable. Physical Demands: All island employees must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills. Full use/range of motion of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency. Must be able to stand in the sun and endure external elements during work assignment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Work Environment: Outdoors may be required to walk in extreme humid and hot conditions.
