Job Summary:
The Utility Generator Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, operation, and monitoring of generators and other utility systems. The Technician will perform troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and repairs to ensure the continuous, efficient, and safe operation of all generators and related utility systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Utility Generator Technician is responsible for, but not limited to the following:
GENERATOR OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE
- Install, operate, and maintain backup and primary generators used for power supply.
- Perform routine checks, inspections, and maintenance on generators to ensure optimal performance.
- Monitor generator performance, load levels, fuel consumption, and operating conditions.
- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical or electrical issues with generators and related equipment.
- Conduct regular testing of generators, ensuring they are ready to operate during power outages or emergencies.
UTILITY READINGS AND MONITORING
- Take accurate readings of utility meters (propane, diesel, electricity, water, gas, etc.) to monitor consumption and operational status.
- Record and analyze data from utility systems to detect any anomalies or inefficiencies.
- Ensure that utility readings are documented according to company protocols and report discrepancies to the appropriate teams.
- Adjust generator load and settings based on utility readings to optimize performance and efficiency.
PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for generators and utility systems.
- Inspect fuel levels, batteries, and other essential components of generators regularly.
- Change oil, air filters, and coolant in generators based on established maintenance schedules.
- Calibrate utility meters and other monitoring equipment to ensure accurate readings.
REPAIRS AND TROUBLESHOOTING
- Perform troubleshooting to identify and resolve mechanical or electrical issues with generators.
- Repair or replace faulty parts, components, or systems to maintain the functionality of generators and utility equipment.
- Respond to generator failures or outages promptly, performing repairs or replacing components as needed.
DOCUMENTATION AND REPORTING
- Maintain accurate logs of generator performance, utility readings, maintenance activities, and any repairs made.
- Report utility meter discrepancies, equipment issues, and completed work to supervisors.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for the maintenance and operation of generators and utility systems.
SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE
- Ensure all generator operations follow safety guidelines and industry best practices.
- Follow proper safety procedures when working with electrical systems, fuel systems, and heavy equipment.
- Ensure the proper disposal of all environmentally hazardous waste.
- Use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to company safety standards.
- Ensure that all work complies with environmental regulations regarding fuel use, emissions, and waste disposal.
- Ensure that all equipment & enclosures are properly secured according to the best safety standards and practices.
COLLABORATION AND COMMUNICATION
- Work closely with maintenance teams and other departments to coordinate generator operations and utility system management.
- Communicate effectively with other departments to minimize disruptions and ensure the continuous flow of power and utilities.
- Provide updates on the status of generators and utility systems during meetings or as requested by management.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE
· Respond quickly and efficiently to utility outages or failures, ensuring that backup generators are deployed as necessary.
· Perform emergency repairs on generators to restore power and utilities as quickly as possible.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in utility management or associated field or equivalent; technical certifications in electrical, mechanical, or utility-related fields (e.g., Generator Maintenance, Electrical Systems) preferred.
- Proven experience in maintaining and operating generators, including troubleshooting and repair.
- Knowledge of utility meter readings, electricity, fuel systems, and generator operation.
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical schematics, blueprints, and manuals.
- Understanding of safety protocols when working with electrical equipment, fuel, and other utility systems.
- Proficient in using tools and diagnostic equipment for generator and utility maintenance.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Certification in generator maintenance or electrical systems.
- Experience working with large-scale generators or in industrial environments.
- Familiarity with energy management systems and software.
- Previous experience working with utility meter readings and reporting systems.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The role involves both indoor and outdoor work in various environmental conditions.
- The technician may be required to work in noisy, confined, or hazardous environments.
- Work may require rotating shifts, on-call availability, or emergency response during power outages.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs. or more).
- Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, and climbing to access equipment.
- Ability to work in confined spaces or awkward positions when servicing generators or meters.
