Job Summary:
The Food Safety Officer will oversee and manage food safety practices throughout our cruise destination. The Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring food safety procedures, ensuring compliance with health regulations, and promoting best practices to ensure the safety and quality of all food served to guests and staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Food Safety Officer is responsible for, but not limited to the following:
Operation and Team Management
- Develop, implement, and maintain food safety policies and procedures in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Monitor food handling practices, including storage, preparation, and service, to ensure compliance with food safety standards.
- Conduct regular inspections of food service areas, kitchens, and storage facilities to identify and address potential food safety hazards.
- Provide training to food service staff on food safety protocols, proper handling techniques, and hygiene practices.
- Develop and deliver educational programs to raise awareness about food safety among employees.
- Ensure that all food service staff are up-to-date with certification requirements and food safety training.
- Investigate and manage food safety incidents, including foodborne illness complaints, contamination events, and safety breaches.
- Implement corrective actions and preventive measures to address and prevent recurrence of food safety issues.
- Work with health authorities and regulatory agencies as needed during investigations or audits.
- Monitor and evaluate food safety practices and procedures to identify areas for improvement.
- Stay current with industry trends, regulations, and advancements in food safety technology.
- Recommend and implement changes to enhance food safety and operational efficiency.
- Collaborate with kitchen and food service managers to ensure the effective implementation of food safety practices.
- Work with vendors and suppliers to ensure that food products meet safety and quality standards.
- Participate in cross-departmental meetings and initiatives to support overall operational goals and standards.
- Assist with general requests for information, assistance and/or complaints from guests and escalate to Assistant Operations Manager.
Compliance & Quality Control
- Uphold environmental policies and procedures.
- Promote a safe work environment; Comply with the safety competencies and all company policies.
- Adhere to the company’s standards regarding dress and appearance.
- Extend appropriate greeting to all guests and crew at every opportunity using their names.
- Apply hospitality standards at all times in guest and crew areas.
- Follow all safety regulations during the course of duty
- Follow all environmental, company and HESS policies and procedures as applicable for the position.
- Oversee food depot operations and presentation to ensure quality, efficiency and safety of guests and team members.
Reporting & Maintenance
- Complete work logs and report any issues to the Guest Experience Manager.
- Maintain food standards for depots and assist with Inspections and quality assurance.
- Management of all food vendor performance contracts and timelines.
- Advise any guest challenges immediately to the Guest Experience Manager.
- Provide input for addressing environmental food safety concerns of the facility.
EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Environmental Health, Hospitality Management, or a related field preferred.
- Certification in food safety, such as ServSafe, HACCP, or equivalent, is required.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in food safety, quality control, or a related role, with at least 1-2 years in a supervisory capacity.
SKILLS & SPECIFICATIONS:
- In-depth knowledge of food safety regulations, standards, and best practices.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and address food safety issues effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on training and education.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in standard office software and food safety management systems.
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially with employees and guests.
- Ability to read and write English in order to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, managers and co-workers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be physically fit.
- Must have strong customer service skills.
- Ability to work in an outdoor environment.
- Ability to multi-task and think critically.
- Previous work experience preferred.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Work primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential.
- Work may require employee to work inside and outside with exposure to changing climate and/or operate machinery.
- May be requested to work a different shift.
