Job Summary:
The Lifeguard Instructor is responsible for the instruction, leadership, supervision, control, and safety of all class participants. The lifeguard instructor is responsible for the appearance, presentation, and working order of all materials and equipment used for lifeguard instruction. It is the lifeguard instructor's responsibility to observe and direct all class participants, and to provide feedback and appropriate correction as instructed or included in the job description.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Lifeguard Instructor is responsible for, but not limited to the following:
Operation and Team Management
- Develop and deliver comprehensive lifeguard training programs, including initial certification and recertification courses.
- Teach and assess skills related to water safety, rescue techniques, first aid, CPR, and emergency response.
- Ensure all training materials and methods are up-to-date with the latest safety standards and practices.
- Create training schedules and coordinate sessions to accommodate the needs of new and current lifeguards.
- Maintain accurate records of training attendance, certification status, and performance evaluations.
- Ensure that all training programs comply with industry regulations and organizational standards.
- Conduct practical and theoretical evaluations of lifeguard trainees to assess their readiness and competence.
- Provide constructive feedback and guidance to trainees to help them improve their skills and performance.
- Address any areas of concern or deficiencies and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Ensure that all lifeguards adhere to established safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Monitor and evaluate lifeguard performance on duty, providing additional training or support as required.
- Stay current with industry trends, safety regulations, and advancements in lifeguard training techniques.
- Manage training documentation, including certification records, training logs, and incident reports.
- Prepare and submit reports on training program effectiveness, trainee progress, and compliance issues.
- Collaborate with management to address any staffing or operational needs related to lifeguard services.
Compliance & Quality Control
- Uphold environmental policies and procedures.
- Promote a safe work environment; Comply with the safety competencies and all company policies.
- Adhere to the company’s standards regarding dress and appearance.
- Always apply hospitality standards on site.
- Follow all safety regulations during duty.
- Follow all environmental, company and HESS policies and procedures as applicable for the position.
- Conduct inspections of facilities.
Reporting & Maintenance
- Complete work logs and report any issues to the Operations Manager.
- Assist with management and maintenance of all units and common spaces on site.
- Report all repairs to be made in assigned section, especially safety related issues and follow-up with management as necessary.
- Advise any employee or security challenges immediately to the Operations Manager.
EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent; certification in Lifeguard Instructor Training and First Aid/CPR/AED is required.
- Certification from a recognized organization (e.g., American Red Cross, YMCA, or equivalent) is required.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a lifeguard, with at least 1-2 years in a supervisory or instructional role.
SKILLS & SPECIFICATIONS:
- Strong knowledge of lifeguard training methodologies, safety protocols, and emergency response procedures.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and train others effectively.
- Ability to assess performance, provide feedback, and handle challenging situations with professionalism.
- Proficiency in standard office software and training management systems.
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially with employees and guests.
- Ability to read and write English in order to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, managers and co-workers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be physically fit.
- Must have strong customer service skills.
- Ability to work in an outdoor environment.
- Ability to multi-task and think critically.
- Previous work experience preferred.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Work primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential.
- Work may require employee to work inside and outside with exposure to changing climate and/or operate machinery.
- May be requested to work a different shift.
