Position Summary:

All duties and responsibilities are to be performed in accordance with Royal Caribbean International’s brand standards, SQM standards, USPH guidelines, environment, and safety policies.

The Balloon Pilot and Co Pilot should possesses a dynamic outgoing demeanor with a passion for delivering industry leading service while demonstrating exemplary skills. Leading by example at the Front of House this is a position that requires exemplary customer engagement. Must be able to responds to any type of emergency.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manages and coordinates performing the following essential duties and responsibilities. All duties and responsibilities are to be performed in accordance with Royal Caribbean International’s Royal Way Experience, SQM standards, USPH guidelines, environmental, and safety policies.  Each Island employee may be required to perform other functions in various venues In accordance with Royal Caribbean International’s philosophy of Anchored in Excellence, each employee conducts oneself in a professional and courteous manner at all times. This consists of physical and verbal interactions with guests or fellow employees.
  • The Balloon pilot is in charge of flights and as such has the right to refuse entry of disembark any guest who may present a danger to the safety of security of the system the pilot is stationed in the gondola, the role is to verify that the prevailing weather conditions are conducive for flying as outlined in the flight manual.
  • Flights will take place multiple times per hour per call day, commencing with a test flight for Safety checks.
  • To provide an exceptional guest experience always with Safety in mind of guests and crew
  • The pilot will be responsible for all aspects associated with safe flight for guests and crew
  • Communication with the Ground Crew to ensure Safe Operation during mooring and flying
  • Performing test flights and recording daily, weekly, monthly inspections as outlined in the Safety manuals
  • The pilot will be fully conversant in the balloon envelope, load ring, control systems, landing platform pulley and cable, main winch and mooring points. Training will be providing and certification granted after fully completing the course – a minimum of 40 hours
  • Understand and be familiar with safety flying positions
  • Be capable of making sound judgement of whether to fly or not and understand the major effects of weather.
  • The Pilot will fly in the Gondola with the guests and be in constant communication with the Ground Crew.
  • The Pilot will learn all aspects of safe mooring of the balloon, maintenance, repair and all aspects of hurricane preparedness.
  • Be capable after training of understanding calculation of passenger load  and when and how to make a decision to stop flights
  • Know how to respond safely to emergency situations, recovery of the balloon by the Ground crew whilst on board
  • Understand and have the capability to respond swiftly and calmly in the event of an incident
  • Have a proven knowledge of first aid and basic firefighting procedures
  • Have the ability to conduct routine maintenance safely which will include the ability to climb to conduct this visual checks and inspections.
  • The pilot shall receive specialized training in the operation of all aspects of the Balloon from a certified Instructor and in turn will be required to pass full certification
  • Supervise and once certified have the ability to manage and train a team of Ground Crew
  • Emergency Top up procedures of the Balloon
  • Comprehension of meteorology, how to read forecasts assessing conditions major effects of weather humidity pressure temperature
  • Have the ability to conduct and complete routine maintenance daily weekly monthly quarterly annual record-keeping observation and of course must have the ability to climb

 Financial Responsibilities

  • To ensure accurate recording of any Island reservations in order to charge the guest accounts
  • Communicate technical needs of any repair and maintenance needs which have significant financial impact

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially with guests.
  • Ability to read and write English, in order to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, managers and co-workers.
  • First Aid and Basic Fire Fighting and Emergency response procedures
  • Proven experience either flying balloon or a parasail operation
  • Effective communication skills both written and verbal
  • Comprehension of meteorology and understand and read forecasts assessing conditions
  • Previous experience in a highly focused customer facing environment

Qualifications:

  • Completion of College Diploma or equivalent
  • A minimum of two (2) years related experience and/or training.
  • Ability to work positively and cooperatively in a diverse team environment to meet overall established time frames for the island operation.
  • Rescue training indicative of the Island/ Water Park Environment
  • Fire fighting, first aid, emergency response and Safety training

Physical Demands:

  • All island employees must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills.
  • Full use/range of motion of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency.
  • Must be able to stand in the sun and endure external elements during work assignment.
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Outdoors may be required to walk in extreme humid and hot conditions.
