Empowering women since 1842, Hollins University unites excellence in liberal arts education with experiential learning opportunities and career preparation to help our students lead lives of consequence. Our broad undergraduate liberal arts curriculum offers strong academic programs and superior teaching that emphasize critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, and collaboration-skills that employers seek. Our top five majors (English, biology, psychology, business, and studio art) underscore the breadth and scope of the Hollins experience in the physical sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 9:1 and an average class size of 12, students work closely with professors and peers alike and have ample opportunities to get involved in activities both in and out of the classroom. Student government is a vital part of Hollins life: all undergraduates are members of the Student Government Association. The university's athletic program is dedicated to the pursuit of academic achievement and athletic excellence, and is committed to the overall success of the student-athlete. Hollins competes in nine athletic sports, including basketball, cross-country, lacrosse, riding, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Experiential learning opportunities for undergraduates include a January Short Term, where students can test drive a career with an internship, take a travel/study course, or conduct research through opportunities supported by the Rutherfoord Center for Experiential Learning, and the Batten Leadership Institute, which teaches students how to understand and navigate feedback, conflict, and negotiation. Fifty-seven percent of our students have an international learning experience, thanks to the generous aid Hollins offers to help students afford their study abroad opportunities. Career preparation is also a hallmark: 79% of Hollins students complete at least one internship during their undergraduate careers, and 50% participate in two or more internships. The university places students in companies, nonprofits, museums, law firms, and hospitals, both in the U.S. and abroad. One year after graduation, 95% of our students are employed or in graduate school. Hollins' historic 475-acre campus is located in Roanoke, Virginia.
