Position Summary: Works in conjunction with the Cruise Director to host, coordinate, schedule, create and supervise the day-to-day entertainment and associated activities presented by the Cruise Director’s Division. Will step up into the Cruise Director’s position as needed. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: All duties and responsibilities are to be performed in accordance with Royal Caribbean International’s The Royal Way, SQM standards, USPH guidelines, environmental, and safety policies. Each shipboard employee may be required to perform all functions in various food and beverage service venues throughout the ship. In accordance with Royal Caribbean International’s philosophy of Anchored in Excellence, each employee conducts oneself in a professional and courteous manner at all times. This consists of physical and verbal interactions guests or fellow shipboard employees and/or in the presence of guest contact and crew areas. Implements Royal Caribbean International’s The Royal Way for Cruise Programs. Manages and develops adult and family activity programming and refreshes current activities sensitive to guest demographics and itinerary fluctuations Maintains a high degree of “floor presence” to observe the operations. Monitors the staff to ensure procedures and services are performed in accordance with The Royal Way. Monitors set-up is performed on time and adequate supplies are prepared. Inspects activity venues, equipment, etc. to ensure efficient service, safety, cleanliness and compliance to standards. Serves as Master of Ceremonies for shows and events presented by the Cruise Director’s Division. Including but not limited to Deck Sail Away Parties, Dancing Under The Stars, Theme Nights, Games Shows, Meet and Mingle Party, Honeymooner’s Party, Talent Show, Singles Events, Karaoke Idol, Private Destination Activities, Captain’s Corner, Parades, Pool Games, Folkloric Shows, Expo! Late Night Comedy, and Crown and Anchor Party. Manages Island-wide venue music according to Royal Caribbean International’s The Royal Way. Venues including but not limited to public spaces, specialty restaurants, dining room, windjammer café, bars, sports deck, pool deck, and private destinations. Manages Island-wide holidays and special events. Confers with Island management to plan and integrate all departments and product offerings to enhance the guest experience through TV, Adventure Ocean, F&B, Decorations, Costumes, Activities, and Music etc. Manages and owns the Explorer Academy program. Manages and owns the Movie experience. Manages the Bingo operation according to Royal Caribbean International’s The Royal Way and SQM. Coordinates with all departments to ensure successful operation. Keeps current on entertainment and activity trends regarding TV, pop culture, sports, nightclubs, activities, game shows, trivia, music, dance crazes, fads, reading materials, etc. Maintains costs at reasonable levels without affecting quality and standards. Reviews and approves the requisitions placed by the CPA. Requires the items be requisitioned in correct quantities, within acceptable time-frames and in accordance with established control procedures. Conducts workstation spot checks to ensure items are correctly stored to minimize deterioration and waste. Investigates and resolves activity quality and service complaints in a timely fashion, and always with a view to exceeding the expectations of our guests. Responds to guest complaints in a considerate, professional and positive manner by showing concern and listening actively. Takes ownership of guest concerns, by following-up and ensuring complaints are resolved to the guest’s satisfaction. Manages the assignment of duties, responsibilities and workstations to employees. Creates staff schedules to estimate staff requirements to ensure quality and delivery of the guest experience to guests. Reviews and approves time-sheets. Reviews personnel actions such as new hire requests and discharges, to ensure proper staffing. On a basis meets with the Sports Supervisor and Adventure Ocean Manager to review Adult Activity, Family Activity and Adventure Ocean programming to review guest demographics and effectively manage the team using the cross utilization matrix to schedule manpower. Mentors, develops and provides on-the-job training to Island staff/DJ to strengthen their current performance and preparation for possible advancement to promotional positions. Observes and evaluates employees to ensure quality standards and service is met. Conducts training for new activities, emcee skills etc. Monitors the daily activities to ensure quality, variety and suitability for the current demographic. Recommends measures to improve activities and employee performance to increase quality of Adult and Family Activities. On a regular basis, meets with staff to disseminate company related correspondence, notices, policies, procedures, etc. Attends meetings, training activities, courses and all other work-related activities as required. Where appropriate, initiates meetings to address and resolve quality concerns and to continuously identify improvement opportunities. Monitors the status of the Balanced Score Card targets to meet assigned goals. Prepares hand over notes for incoming Activities Manager. Performs related duties as required. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Theatre, Arts, Recreation, Leisure Studies, Public Relations, Communication or related field from an accredited university or college or the international equivalent preferred. One to two years Master of Ceremonies or professional entertainment (theatre, music, dance, comedy, etc.) experience with resorts, cruise lines, entertainment or recreational industries preferred. Special talent skills such as singing, dancing, ballroom dancing, juggling preferred. Ability to capture and manage the attention of a large group of people with effective and courteous microphone techniques to serve as master of ceremonies at major events and shows. Ability to design creative activities for Adult and Family programming while containing costs. Ability to work positively and cooperatively in a diverse team environment to meet overall established timeframes for the entire Adult and Family Activity Program. Ability to communicate tactfully with department heads, coworkers and other shipboard employees to resolve problems and negotiate resolutions. Ability to utilize customer service skills by exercising authority and discretion to satisfy guests in a manner consistent with Royal Caribbean International’s The Royal Way. Ability to mediate, diffuse and/or resolve problems and negotiate resolutions. Demonstrated aptitude for the financial aspects of an activity and entertainment operation, including the successful identification of expense reduction through cost control. Demonstrated aptitude for the management of headcount within assigned area, as it relates to and supports the business needs of the vessel. Ability to manage the international staff in a positive and productive manner by motivating, developing and managing employees as they work. Knowledge of policies and practices involved in the human resources function. Ability to utilize and administer the disciplinary action process through coaching and counseling to improve performance or terminate employment. Knowledge of policies and practices involved in the human resources function. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal service including needs assessment, problem resolution and achievement of quality service standards. Working knowledge of computers, Internet access, and the ability to navigate within a variety software packages such as Excel, Word, and Adobe Page Maker or related programs. Completion of high school or basic education equivalency required. Language Requirements: Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially with guests. Ability to read and write English in order to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors and co-workers. Physical Demands: All island employees must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills. Full use/range of motion of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency. Must be able to stand in the sun and endure external elements during work assignment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
