Position Summary: In addition to the general physician responsibilities on Coco Cay, the Island Doctor will provide administrative leadership to the shipboard Doctors and Nurses visiting the island. The Island Doctor will provide Medical care to all Guests and Crew members. The Island Doctor shall assist the site manager in all island health-related matters including outbreak prevention and illness reporting as required by international, national and company policies. The Island Doctor will be the leader that guides and oversees the medical management of Crew members living on the Island, under the supervision of the Director of Medical Operations and the wellness physicians. In order to consistently exceed guest expectations and provide the highest levels of services, additional duties and responsibilities may be assigned by the shore side medical operations leadership and site manager. Essential Duties & Responsibilities To be proficient in all aspects and able to perform all responsibilities of a Ship Doctor’s professional duties and lead by example, providing outstanding Medical care to Guests and Crew members. To train and provide clinical leadership and direction to the members of the island Code Alpha team To provide administrative coordination of the day-to-day functions and operation of the first aid stations, in collaboration the shipboard medical team while on Coco Cay. To act as a clinical resource and to be able to orient and train members of the shipboard medical team to operations while visiting the Island. To promote the confidentiality of all clinical and medical information and to ensure that all staff, at all times, understand the critical importance of maintaining confidentiality of patients’ medical information. To provide close oversight of medication and supplies ordering to ensure that the first aid stations are appropriately stocked, while ensuring that all budget guidelines and policies are followed. To provide oversight to the management of Island Crew member medical problems, including, but not limited to, promotion of Crew Wellness programs, scheduling and coordination of medical appointments and emergency medical “sign offs”. To provide administrative oversight of the process for reviewing Pre-Employment Medical Exams (PEME) and Re-Employment Medical Examinations (REME) to ensure that all such physical exams are complete in accordance to ILO guidelines. To ensure that the narcotics and controlled substances are secured, dispensed and accounted for in accordance with all applicable US federal statutes, Bahamian law and company policies. To supervise and complete annual inventory of medical supplies, medications and consumable items and ensure all expired medications are removed and properly disposed. To ensure that the routine preventative maintenance of all medical equipment is completed and that records of such work are kept on site for audit and documentation purposes. To ensure that defibrillator, critical life support, medical equipment and emergency bag checklists are completed as per company policies. To work collaboratively with the Site Manager and Port Captain to ensure that all applicable mandatory disease or illness reporting is performed on a timely and complete basis, as required by US federal statute, and international law as defined under the International Health Regulations and Bahamian regulations. To obtain permission from the Site Manager or Port Captain for any emergency purchases made outside the normal supplies requisition process. Other clinical and administrative duties as may be assigned by the Director of Medical Operations or Chief Medical Officer. The Doctor shall have an understanding of the Safety and Quality Management System (SQM) and carry out the policies and procedures appropriate for his/her position. Provide First-Aid instruction for island staff members, overseeing the operation, good order and cleanliness of the Medical Centers on Coco Cay. Provide Medical care for minor and major emergency situations for Guests, Crew members and Island personnel. It is the responsibility of the Doctor to stabilize ill patients, and to be aware of the resources available through the Help Line. It is the responsibility of all Doctors to become fully versed with the policies and procedures of the company as well as the particular requirements of the island. The Island Doctor will be familiar with management and documentation of Controlled Substance storage and destruction in accordance with standard procedures as outlined in SQM. When a ship is not visiting the Island the Island Doctor will hold office hours in accordance with the instruction of the Site Manager or Port Captain. When the Doctor receives a telephone call or otherwise becomes aware of a potentially serious medical issue outside established office hours, the contact or telephone call shall be followed-up by an "in person" visit with the patient. The Doctor may request to be escorted by member of island security team, and the all calls should then be documented accordingly in the medical records. The Doctor will test water samples delivered to the medical facility for this purpose, using the method designated by Public Health (such as Colisure) and maintain a log of test results. The Doctor must report any positive and negative findings immediately to site manager. The Doctor will maintain the medical records for all island staff members. Under circumstances where the Island Doctor learns of accident involving Island Crew members, the Island Doctor will report the matter to the Site Manager or Port Captain immediately, both verbally and in writing. Maintains Acute Gastroenteritis log for U.S.P.H. or any port health authorities and reports as required. Executes Code Alpha / Star Code procedures regardless of being on duty or not. Executes air and land evacuation procedures. Trains and leads stretcher teams and first-aid training for Island Crew members. Performs checks of emergency equipment and maintenance of all Medical Center equipment. Sterilizes surgical instruments. Properly disposes of hazardous wastes and used sharps (needles, syringes). Oversees cleanliness of the Medical Center in a clean and orderly fashion. Actively participants in Island Crew member education and training programs. Executes and has a good working knowledge SeaCare. Nature and Scope The Island Doctor will carry a two-way communication device or a hand-phone at all times, ready to respond to emergencies and keep a first response bag in his/her proximity at night. The incumbent must be able to work in a multi-cultural environment, and must also be able to adjust to changes in schedules, assignments and deadlines Required Documents upon Joining: Island Doctors must bring the following documents or their photocopies with them when they arrive to the Island: Medical School Diploma Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Life Support and professional license certificates that are valid for the entire lengths of their contract. It is the responsibility of the Island Doctor to take the Continuing Medical Education courses and tests that are necessary to keep these licenses valid, along with any required post graduate credits. Qualifications: The requirements for Island Doctor include all of the requirements of a Ship Doctor. This includes a minimum of three years of experience in acute care medicine, such as Urgent Care, Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care or Cardiac Care. All positions require repetitive motion of bending, climbing, going up and down stairs and being able to lift up to 50 pounds. This job requires specific vision abilities to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. All team members must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills. All positions require full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats. All team members must be able to work within different temperature changes, both indoors and outdoors. This is a minimal description of duties.
